Lock Rekeying

Lock Rekeying is an Affordable Way to Upgrade Your Security

When most people change the locks on their home or office locks they replace the the entire lock. But did you know there’s a more affordable option, and it preserves the existing lock hardware? It’s called lock rekeying and our highly trained and licensed local residential and commercial locksmiths can do it for you! Give us a call and we’ll be happy to talk explain the service to you and give you a free quote.

What is Lock Rekeying?

replacing pins in the lock cylinder

After the old pins have been removed from the lock cylinder the new key is inserted. Then new pins are inserted that match up with the cuts on the new key.

Lock rekeying is an affordable alternative to lock replacement, and it can be done on all types of locks, including car, home, and commercial-grade models. Instead of changing the lock hardware, we remove the lock cylinder and replace the existing pins with new ones that work with a brand-new key. The result is an instant security upgrade that lets you rest assured that any copies of the old key will not work in the reconfigured lock.

Reasons to Choose Lock Rekeying

There are many reasons our customers call us to rekey their locks instead of replacing them with new ones, and here are some of the most common:

  • It’s cost-effective: As with any locksmith service, multiple factors determine what we charge, but most of the time rekeying a lock is less expensive than total lock replacement if the existing lock is in good working condition. If the lock has suffered damage due to an attempted break-in, or an old key has broken off in the lock in such a way that extracting it damages the cylinder, we may not be able to rekey it and will need to replace it with a new one.
  • It saves time: Rekeying a lock isn’t always faster than a total lock replacement, but most of the time it is. Because we use your original lock hardware, you can be sure the lock already fits in the door and new holes won’t be needed to fit a replacement deadbolt of a different size. This alone can shave time off of the job.
  • It preserves your existing hardware: If you’ve recently upgraded your front door with all-new coordinated hardware in the exact style and finish you’ve always wanted, rekeying the cylinder does not involve changing any external hardware.

Rekeying Home Locks

There are many reasons you may need to change your locks, and lock rekeying is almost always the best option vs lock replacement. If you just moved into a new home and you don’t know who has keys to your existing locks, rekeying them will give you an instant security upgrade and render all those old keys useless. If your keys have been stolen, rekeying the locks will prevent unauthorized access. If the deadbolt and doorknob lock on your front door use two different keys, we can rekey them to work with the same key. We can also rekey your back door locks to work with the same key. Our residential locksmiths can advise you on what option is best for you.
